Young Hawtayne was the son of the Reverend William Hawtayne and entered the Royal Navy aged 11 in 1793 with his intention of becoming a Ship's Chaplin

and by 1940 the brand trademark initials ACS  were changed to AWS to reflect the change in ownership and name: Alexander Coppel Solingen to Alcoso-Werk Solingen

and was also chosen by the French cavalry for some of its armoured vehicles
